PHASE ONE
The Challenge
Health trends and fad workouts come and go. There seems to be an endless number of fitness apps, mindfulness meditations and workout routines on the market, but like traditional gym membership, these subscriptions have low retention. Beginning a health and wellness journey can be a struggle, even for those that keep an active lifestyle. Getting users to maintain this pursuit through the use of their platform is a problem experienced by most. We needed to create an application that went beyond other platforms, allowing individuals to feel positively fulfilled by their individual wellness journey now, as a means to sustain a higher quality of life. Focusing on users’ long term wellness goals and sustaining health throughout a life, can mean the difference between long term user engagement and drop-off.
In order to ensure that our new platform would meet user wellness goals as well as potential business expectations, the application needed to develop a holistic solution to long term wellness that:
Design Objectives
Reduces customer drop off
Motivates users to implement a range of sustainable healthy habitss
Meets user needs in all aspects of creating a healthy lifestyle
Sustains user engagement for long term, as well as short term goals.
This application was created as a sprint exercise for Northwestern’s UX/UI Bootcamp. Discovery, research, design and testing took place during a three week period. Our team of two was able to create BluePrint, an innovative solution to meeting long term wellness goals, thus sustaining physical and mental wellbeing as we age. With features that cater to the individual through customizable goals, personalized recommendations and adaptive strategies for maintaining positive health at any age. BluePrint offers unique features that emphasize human connection, and drive community wellness as an important component to every wellness journey.
PHASE TWO
Discovery
We chose to look at what we know about wellness and longevity. What research exists on wellness and aging? Who does it best and how can we compel users to emulate these lifestyle choices while using our app? Our research found that the answer lay in the Blue Zones that exist around the world.
Blue Zones are geographic areas with lower rates of chronic diseases and a longer life expectancy with inhabitants living to be 90-100yrs old. Although their lifestyles may differ slightly, most can attribute their longevity and good health to a combination of:

Sounds simple enough. Just three components that we hear often and know to be true, but have a difficulty prioritizing amid busy schedules. According to our research, many users had difficulty remaining consistent in their exercise routines, often became bored with cooking the same “healthy” “diet” food options, and didn’t know how to proceed. Time, boredom and unknowing were three factors contributing to the lifestyle of our potential users interested in prioritizing health but were unaware of how to incorporate these simple elements into their lifestyle in order to meet their long term goals of health and longevity.
Based on our principal objectives, we formulated an interview plan. We spoke to potential users through one on one interviews and followed up on these insights through a social media survey, allowing for a broad understanding of users’ relationship with health and wellness.
What drives them to pursue their health & wellness ?
How do our potential users define health & wellness ?
What obstacles are they facing along the way ?
What are some ways in which our potential users cultivate health & wellness ?
How has their relationship with health and wellness evolved over time?
We received responses from individuals ranging in age from 25 to 75. Our survey verified many of our assumptions about individuals’ conceptions and intentions surrounding their health. Blue Zone principles were reflected in the insights gleaned from our wellness survey and user interviews. Our interview subjects referencing its core elements as being important components to their own conceptions of wellness. The majority agreed that physical fitness and longevity were their biggest motivations for seeking healthy habits and there was firm agreement that the connection between mental and physical well being operated as an additional motivating factor.
Trends from the survey display longterm goals of wellness and societal expectations on the way this can be achieved.
Our research produced visible trends in the individuals desire to achieve longterm goals for mental and physical wellness, as much for themselves as those in their lives. Maintaining ability and being mentally present were provided as key motivators in their desire to take charge of their health.
PHASE THREE
Ideation
“If you feel like you're doing something good for your body, it's good for your head.”
Defining The User
We began to understand that our potential users had some sense of the need to pursue their health and wellness with the goal to sustain a higher quality of life. The desire for immediate, observable success has allowed longevity and all around wellness to take a backseat in our health plans. Even with this being so, our research showed a commonality among people speaking about their health that looks to their ability to remain healthy, active and happy for as long as possible.
Utilizing the influential insights gleaned from detailed accounts provided by potential users, data from our survey and secondary source research on BlueZones, allowed us to outline a user persona.
Fitness enthusiasts, and novists alike, those on a quest to discover fresh methods for seamlessly integrating straightforward and sustainable healthy routines into his daily life. With the awareness that aging necessitates a broader approach to longevity, potential users recognize that prioritizing health and wellness extends beyond mere gym sessions, encompassing a holistic lifestyle for both the individual and their families.
During our initial user interviews and survey, we discovered that the majority believe that health and wellness are a daily holistic practice that involves both the mind and body, resulting in a long and well lived life. However, for those here in the US, finding and implementing a well balanced range of sustainable healthy habits that service their physical, psychological, and social needs can be a challenge.
Pain Points
Workout fatigue
Finding and choosing the healthy option
Busy schedule that does not facilitate routine
Motivation
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle while aging is understood as crucial to long term health and happiness. However, through mutual pain points, most find it difficult to source and incorporate a well rounded regiment to meet all their needs outside the obvious scope of fitness and diet. We see the opportunity which would help them take control of their present & future well being by creating an application based resource with researched backed health minded lifestyle recommendations and solutions.
Competitor Analysis
By examining similar products on the market we were able to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in our competitors' approach. Not only did we find features and flows that we could benefit from implementing in our own mobile application, we were able to distinguish how we could leverage our position within the market. Of the seven competitors examined, all neglected to offer a holistic approach to their user’s health. While most focus on either physical or emotional wellbeing, they did not offer seamless integration or adaptability for the individual. By locating the hole in the market, BluePrint found its niche, allowing us to hone in on features that would prioritize adapting, personalized and accessible approaches to varying types of health goals at every stage of life.
The Best
Simple design/flow

The Worst

Limited scope either/or wellness
Individual focused activities
After laying out our prioritization matrix we picked out key trends both important to the user and achievable in the scope of time allotted for our project, that would make for key application features. We based BluePrint’s key features on the Blue Zones principles of diet, movement and community. Leveraging elements of the healthiest places on earth, indicated our branding and the trustworthy, research backed presidents for BluePrints offerings. BluePrint stands out as not only providing reliable resources but also a way to track progress and changes, while connecting with other like minded users in their community.
